How do I?
The Doubts of Their Fathers: black religious scepticism during the age of Jim Crow, and the secular origins of the civil rights movement
This project -- run by Dr. Stephen Tuck, and funded by the British Academy -- will explore the religious scepticism among prominent black protest leaders, one that reflected the disenchantment with Christianity of many educated black Americans. The project will investigate the extent, and causes, of black unbelief, and the reasons why protest leaders continued to use orthodox Christian language in public. The project will include a conference on the subject to held in Oxford in 2012-13.
