Thanks to the generosity of benefactors, the Rothermere American Institute is able to award travel grants each year for primary research on the history, politics or culture of the United States.

Successful applicants will each be awarded £500.

Each of the following categories are eligible to apply: Oxford undergraduate students, Oxford postgraduate students, Oxford early career researchers, and post-doctoral academics affiliated with Oxford and/or the RAI without access to personal research funds.

Travel and reporting for awards made in 2020 should be completed by the start of 0th week of Trinity Term 2021.

Applications should consist of the following materials:

  1. A statement of a maximum of 500 words, which outline how an RAI Travel Award would enable them to undertake primary research in support of their undergraduate, Master’s or Doctoral thesis, or postdoctoral research project.
  2. A C.V. of no more than three pages.
  3. A summary of projected costings for their research trip.

Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate how their research is of interest to the wider RAI community, or to the research focuses of the Institute. Reports from past years can be viewed at https://www.rai.ox.ac.uk/students/travel-awards.

Applicants should submit their application to enquiries@rai.ox.ac.uk. The deadline for submission of applications is 12 noon on Monday 2 March 2020. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by Monday 16 March.
