Congratulations to three RAI Fellows on their research posts and published work

The RAI is celebrating the recent achievements of some of its Postdoctoral Fellows who have secured research positions and had their work published.

Congratulations to RAI Postdoctoral Fellow Martha Swift on being appointed as a Junior Research Fellow in the Humanities at St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford.

Martha has been elected a JRF of St Catherine’s College for up to three years. She will be working on a new project, provisionally titled ‘The World and the Western’, which explores how contemporary writers of the American West—novelists, poets, playwrights and illustrators—in the United States and around the world are reworking 150 years of the Western’s history, engaging long histories of travel, transnational authorship and global interconnectedness in the region and for the genre.

Congratulations to RAI Postdoctoral Fellow Rebecca Bradburn on being appointed a Junior Research Fellow in English at Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge.

This 3-year full-time research post offers an opportunity for scholars at an early stage of their academic careers to establish a successful research profile and to carry out novel research. While at Sidney, Rebecca will continue work on her second monograph project, tentatively entitled Bee on the Brain: Poetry’s Hum. Identifying a recurrent poetic fascination with the cognitive impact of hums—human, insect and technological—this project seeks to offer the first full account of how poets from across the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries sought to harness, describe and combat the hypnotic effect of hums. Why do hums fascinate poets? And what do they do to the brain?

Congratulations to RAI Postdoctoral Fellow Jacob Brandler on his article being republished in Animal History: History as if Animals Mattered. Jacob was also interviewed in Psychology Today, and received a mention in the Cherwell newspaper.
