A new series of the RAI’s podcast, The Last Best Hope?, launches on Wednesday 11 February with an interview with former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Podcast host and RAI Director Adam Smith discussed with Secretary Clinton her new book on decision making, focusing on the Bin Laden raid. But in doing so, they talked about Clinton’s upbringing, her Methodism, and her belief in American exceptionalism.Â
Secretary Clinton will not be the United States’ first woman president, but hers is still a life and career that will leave its mark for as long as the republic exists. Any meaningful story of US politics from the late 60s to now will include her dramatic triumphs, steady accomplishments, frustrating setbacks and stunning defeats. Her story is also that of the social revolution wrought by the women’s movement, a tale of the abundance and rising opportunities of the 60s and 70s, and of the splintering, polarising impact of the internet-driven media revolution since the 90s. And in this podcast, Adam explores with Secretary Clinton the moral underpinning of her career — her earnest determination to do as much good in the world as she can, however she can.
This is the 15th series of The Last Best Hope?, which is now supported by the generosity of Tom Amraoui. Later episodes in this series explore the ways in which — in a historic reversal — progressives are turning to states’ rights arguments to thwart federal power. We also feature a special two-part documentary that situates the Declaration of Independence in historical context, understanding what it was intended to achieve and why it said what it did.Â
