RAI, St Edmund Hall and Christ Church announce creation of the Broadbent Junior Research Fellowship in American History

The Rothermere American Institute, St Edmund Hall and Christ Church are delighted to announce the establishment of the Broadbent Junior Research Fellowship in American History. Starting in Michaelmas Term 2017, the endowed fellowship will allow a postdoctoral scholar to produce exceptional research for publication in books and articles, to gain essential experience in teaching, and to work alongside Oxford’s many specialist faculty in American history. Tenable for three years, the Broadbent Junior Research Fellowship will alternate in its college association between St Edmund Hall and Christ Church.

The prize has been endowed by a generous donation from the William S. Broadbent Family and will be funded by the net income from this sum. Avery W. Broadbent (St Edmund Hall, 2004) and William S. Broadbent, Jr. (Christ Church, 2006) both studied in Oxford at the RAI and received Master of Studies, Modern History. The Rothermere American Institute, St Edmund Hall and Christ Church record their gratitude to the Broadbent Family for its generosity in establishing the prize.

“The Broadbent JRF will be a great addition to Oxford’s American history community. Postdoctoral scholarships give vital opportunities to scholars embarking on academic careers and we all look forward to welcoming the Broadbent Fellow in October.” — Pekka Hämäläinen, Rhodes Professor of American History.

“This is a munificent and innovative gift that both facilitates the study of American History and brings to the Hall a vibrant young academic. We are extremely grateful to the Broadbent family for their generosity and support.” — Keith Gull, CBE, Principal of St Edmund Hall.

“The Broadbent family initiative is a great contribution to the study of American history at Oxford, which goes from strength to strength, and it is in itself a landmark in Anglo-American co-operation in our increasingly global world. We greatly look forward to developing our links at Christ Church with this generous and timely initiative.” — Brian Young, University Lecturer and Charles Stuart Student and Tutor in Modern History, Christ Church.
