Populism and Memories in a Sea of Storms: Hurricanes and the Creation of Welfare States in the Greater Caribbean

Professor Stuart Schwartz (Yale University) will deliver this year's Sir John Elliott Lecture. An expert on the history of colonial Latin America, he is currently working on Portuguese independence and the crisis of the Iberian Atlantic 1620-1670, and recently published Sea of Storms: A History of Hurricanes in the Greater Caribbean from Columbus to Katrina (2015). He will speak on 'Populism and memories in a sea of storms: hurricanes and the creation of welfare states in the greater Caribbean'.
