Face-to-face with Trump: Dependent Mexico and the hegemon

starr poster

Donald Trump has made Mexico a scapegoat for the challenges faced by the United States in the early 21st century.  This talk will illuminate how Mexico has responded to this reality and, in the process, managed to keep the hegemon at bay.  It will also consider the viability of Mexico’s strategy moving forward, given the realities of U.S. and Mexican politics and economics, and the global context within which they operate.

Dr Pamela K. Starr is Director of the U.S.-Mexico Network at USC and has previously worked for the Eurasia Group and the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), a private university in Mexico City. Starr has advised the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, as well as high-level officials from the Mexican executive branch. She received her PhD from USC in 1993.
