RAI–Miller Center joint workshop: The Future of America in the World
American Democracy is faced with enormous challenges at home and abroad – at a time when a sharply divided nation struggles to reach a national consensus over how these problems should be resolved. As these political battles play out, all eyes are focused on an historically iconoclastic president. While campaigning for the presidency, Donald Trump promised to be a disrupter – to “shake up” American politics and policy – both at home and abroad. The sessions will examine and assess the high-stakes battles in domestic and foreign policy as we approach the American mid-term elections. How has the Trump White House – and the powerful domestic and international forces that roil the country – affected American politics and government? From NAFTA to TPP, what are the effects of a Trump presidency on global trade? What is America’s role in a changing international landscape?
Panelists from the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia and the Rothermere American Institute will consider these and related questions. Prepared remarks will be followed by questions from the floor.
