Roll Away The Stone: African American Gospel Music 1930-1965

Roll Away The Stone will document why African American gospel music is important historically as well as artistically, adopting a new multi-faceted perspective. Previous books have celebrated the music and its major artists, but have mostly not examined its larger historical significance, as this book will do, going back to the eighteenth-century. It represents eight years of archival and musical research, including 29 new filmed interviews (for a documentary) conducted in black churches located in the most important cities of the early development of African American gospel.

This seminar is taking place in person only. For AHRS updates and pre-circulated papers, please join the mailing list by sending a blank email to ahrs-subscribe@maillist.ox.ac.uk.
