Where next for the Anglo-American 'Special Relationship'?

Registration required: This event is open to members of the University of Oxford only. Please use your University email address to register.

Since 1942, the UK-US relationship has been founded on intelligence-sharing, a military alliance, shared values, and the United States’ commitment to maintain European security. As the postwar order comes under increasing strain, we welcome to the RAI the US Embassy London’s Deputy Chief of Mission Matthew Palmer, a career member of the US Senior Foreign Service. He will offer his reflections about the current state of the Special Relationship between the US and UK, foreign policy challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead, followed by a question-and-answer session. All members of the University are warmly welcome. A drinks reception will follow. The event will be chaired by RAI Director Adam Smith.

Matthew Palmer is the Deputy Chief of Mission at Embassy London. Previously, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and the Secretary of State’s Special Representative for the Western Balkans. Over the course of a thirty-year career, Matt has been posted to Belgrade, Nicosia and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. In Washington, he has served on the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff and at the National Security Council. Matt is the author of an award-winning series of novels featuring American diplomats as protagonists. He is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations and a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College. His languages are Serbian, Greek and Japanese.
