Two former RAI Senior Visiting Research Fellows feature on the latest episode of 'In Our Time' on BBC Radio 4. Celeste-Marie Bernier (2012-13) and Nicholas Guyatt (2013-14) join Melvyn Bragg to discuss the life and ideas of Frederick Douglass.
Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818, and after escaping in 1838, became one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement. He described his life as a slave in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845) and became noted for his oratory. He went on to to tour Britain and Ireland, addressing huge audiences, but soon resumed campaigning in the United States. Following the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, Douglass continued to agitate for equal rights for African-Americans and women.
