Emily Coit is an Associate Instructional Professor in the Department of English at the University of Chicago. Her teaching and scholarship focus on conversations about education and democracy in the US during the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She is the author of American Snobs: Transatlantic Novelists, Liberal Culture, and the Genteel Tradition (Edinburgh, 2021) as well as articles in College Literature, ELH, The Henry James Review, Nineteenth-Century Literature, and a number of edited collections. Her current book project, titled "Hard Reading," examines the making and early reception of the Harvard Classics.Â
