The RAI is hosting a series of in-person events throughout 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Although the Declaration’s immediate aim was to proclaim the thirteen of Britain’s American colonies free and independent states, its language and ideals resonated far beyond the new nation’s borders. Its assertion of universal rights helped inspire movements around the world, even as the formation of the United States exposed profound contradictions—a nation that championed freedom and liberty while simultaneously entrenching racial exclusion, dispossession, and violent inequity.
Through conferences, book talks, and other public programs, leading scholars of the revolutionary era will examine the multiple meanings and legacies of the United States’ founding document from a wide range of social, cultural, and geographic perspectives.
Upcoming and past events are listed below, and additional programs will be added throughout the year. All our 250th-anniversary events are open to the public.
