Professor Anthea Butler is the Geraldine R. Segal Emerita Professor from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a historian of American and African American religion, and her research spans Christian Nationalism, race, politics, evangelicalism, and media. Professor Butler’s recent book is White Evangelical Racism: The Politics of Morality in America on Ferris and Ferris/UNC Press. Professor Butler was the winner of the 2022 Martin Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion from the American Academy of Religion and has received grants from the Koch Center, American Council of Learned Societies, Princeton University, Yale University, and Harvard University. She is also an opinion columnist for MSNOW. Her project at RAI will be researching and writing a book on history, nostalgia and Christian nationalism in 20th Century America.
