Benedict Willis

I am a first-year DPhil student at University College supervised by Professor Adam Smith. Prior to Oxford, I completed my B.A. in History (2017-2020) and M.Phil in Modern European History (2021-2022) at the University of Cambridge. In both my undergraduate and graduate work, I have been particularly interested in American history through a transnational lens, writing my M.Phil dissertation on 1848 revolutionaries in exile in the United States of America.

My current research focuses on nineteenth century German emigres in the United States of America, looking at how and why a cadre of radicals embraced American nationalism and expansion. I am also especially interested in the utopian thought of exiled revolutionaries and how their experience of failure influenced these ideas.
