Harriet Smith Hughes

I’m a third-year DPhil candidate, affiliated with both the English Faculty and Rothermere American Institute. My doctoral research, titled ‘Genres of Intimacy: The problem of the personal in US nonfiction since 1985’, supervised by Merve Emre, traces the turn towards personal, autobiographical, and reparative practices across five genres of US nonfiction.

My research interests include: queer theory; affect theory; Afro-pessimism; queer utopianism; Black Marxism; black feminisms; autobiography; the essay; lyric; anthologies and anthologisation.

I have experience designing and teaching 8-week courses in Contemporary Literature and Queer Literature. I am currently supervising, or have recently supervised, undergraduate dissertations on topics including: Anaïs Nin and l’ecriture feminine; Maggie Nelson and autotheory; Frank B. Wilderson III and the politics of disappointment; Frank Ocean and afro-fabulation; Hanya Yanigahara and religious figurations of trauma.
