Joe Battle

Joel Battle is a DPhil International Relations student at the Department of Politics and International Relations, St. Antony’s College. His PhD research covers how the emergence of new technologies – internally from the US and externally from its adversaries – motivates change in US nuclear strategy. Before his DPhil, Joel graduated with distinction with a MPhil in International Relations, also from Oxford. He earned his BA from the University of Exeter in History and International Relations.

Joel’s other major research interests include US grand strategy and force posture in the Middle East; he has worked as a research assistant on this topic since March 2024. For his MPhil thesis, Joel studied organizational learning in United Nations peacekeeping missions. He is broadly interested in strategic studies, post-World War II US foreign policy, US-China foreign relations, and Eurasian history.
