Sylvia McKelvie

Sylvia is a DPhil candidate in Geography and the Environment, joint funded by the ESRC and St John’s College, Oxford. Using ethnographic and archival methods, her current doctoral research explores how harm reduction organisations across Los Angeles, California have integrated trauma-informed practice in community-based overdose prevention. Sylvia’s research interests include critical drug studies, space, place and health, social movements in the US, urban governance, structural inequalities, and feminist STS.

Sylvia received her BA in Sociology (Honours) from the University of British Columbia and MSc in City Design and Social Science (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed publications, including the journals City & Community, Critical Disability Discourse and the anthology Bioinformation Worlds and Futures. Prior to Oxford, Sylvia held senior research and leadership positions at King’s College Hospital (NHS Foundation Trust) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research.
