After a distinguished career in the Army and in service to Prince Philip, Mr Vyvyan Harmsworth LVO became involved in supporting the study of American history at Oxford in 1985. He has been a steadfast and deeply engaged advocate for the field within Oxford ever since. Over the course of many decades, he has served on the Harmsworth Professorship Board of Electors, attended without fail the annual Harmsworth Lecture, and welcomed Harmsworth Professors to his home.
As Secretary of the Rothermere Foundation, Mr Harmsworth also played an important role in the early discussions that led to the creation of what is now the RAI. For forty years and counting, he has been an active and pivotal figure in helping strengthen the University of Oxford’s status as the leading academic institution in Europe for the study of the United States and its place in the wider world.
